Weardale and Surrounding Areas

Weardale, Although in Country Durham its location is close to the borders of Cumbria and Northumberland making this an ideal base to get out and explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 

Local amenities including 2 pubs, one of which serves food, a post office with tea room, a café and Co-op, are located in the village of St Johns Chapel. 

For those who want to embrace the outdoors, you can begin many walks or cycle routes from the doorstep and the Weardale Activity Centre is also in the area as well as Hamsterley Forest which is just 39 miles away, with over 4900 acres of woodland to explore on foot, bike or horse back. 

The North of England Lead Mining Museum at Killhope is a five minute drive from the cottage, and is worth a visit giving you an insight into the lead mining era with underground tours. Killhope Lead Mining Museum is one of two award winning museums in the Weardale area, the second one being Weardale Museum which is a small, volunteer run museum dedicated to preserving the history & heritage of Weardale and its people.
